Beckley's intermodal project gets $2.3 million in federal funds

BECKLEY, W.Va. -- The U.S. Department of Transportation has released $2.3 million for the Beckley Intermodal Gateway project.

U.S. Rep. Nick J. Rahall said Thursday that the funding is part of $20 million he secured for the project in a 2005 transportation bill. The project is known as BIG.

Rahall said the $2.3 million will be used to develop BIG's intermodal facility, which will serve as a central bus depot, a taxi hub and a car rental facility.

Mayor Emmett Pugh says BIG will provide a new gateway into the city and will be a lynchpin for downtown development.

My hometown Beckley is, well, downtown dead and has been dead for years. Just got back about a month ago from going in on Harper Rd and the downtown section is blighted with few businesses. Been that way for years. Thank goodness for Fed $ or the place would be completely boarded up. Who rides the buses INTO Beckley? Taxi's to where? Outback on Harper Rd? Tamarack? Thank goodness for the Interstate and the Harper Rd interchange or the city would be completely lost. While I am not keen on pork spending, Beckley needs every penny it can get, as do most of WV towns and cities so I commend Byrd, Rahall (and wish Rocky would get it in gear) for their looking back to their home state. Would rather see the $ go to long paying jobs, but hopefully some Beckley/WV citizens will get some good jobs building this "Intermodal Project." What a neat gov't title...Intermodal. Hopefully, our fearless DC leaders can find more "Intermodal" $ for WV and Beckley in the form of permanent, good paying, jobs.

Is this wise use of 2.3 million? Been to downtown
Beckley lately? Aready have relocated Bus Depot
which is seldom used. Taxi hub! Come on, this
ain't New York City.
