Hope still remains for mall's discount apparel store

CHARLESTON, W.Va -- There's hope some of the Steve & Barry's stores in West Virginia will remain open.

The clothing retailer filed for bankruptcy protection in early July.

Steve & Barry's has six stores in West Virginia: At the Charleston Town Center; Grand Central Mall in Vienna; Huntington Mall in Barboursville; Meadowbrook Mall in Bridgeport; Mercer Mall in Bluefield; and Morgantown Mall in Westover.

The Wall Street Journal reports that a New York investment firm, Bay Harbour Management, is the leading candidate to purchase the company's assets out of bankruptcy. The Journal says Bay Harbour has a plan to keep 125 to 200 of Steve & Barry's 276 stores open.

An auction of Steve & Barry's assets was underway in New York City earlier this week. A bankruptcy judge must approve the winning bid.

In a Tuesday column headlined, "From the Penthouse to the Greenbrier," Wall Street Journal travel writer Marshall Crook notes that as summer comes to an end, the nation's top hotels and resorts are offering special deals.

"The luxurious, 200-year-old Greenbrier resort in West Virginia is offering additional nights free, through Dec. 21," Crook reported. "As part of the 'Just One More Day' promotion, guests who book three nights will get a fourth free." Crook notes that rates start at $275 a night and vary depending on the type of room and time of year.

More information about the offer is posted on the Greenbrier's Web site at www.green

brier.com.

Meanwhile, the Greenbrier is offering next week's Business Summit participants a special deal. Attendees who extend their stay before or after the main program dates will receive a $100 credit for each additional night of their stay for use at any of the resort's shops or recreational activities. The offer is based on availability.

Please hope that such a place CLOSES--cheaply-made apparel from third-world sweatshops! If only Wal-Mart were in such trouble.
