Woodrow "Pud" Allen

 

Woodrow "Pud" Allen, 86, of Peterstown died May 14, 2008. Service will be 2 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at Broyles-Shrewsbury Funeral Home, Peterstown. Burial will follow at Peterstown Cemetery, Giles County, Va. Friends may call Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ernest Lee Arbuckle

 

Ernest Lee Arbuckle, 82, of Haines City, Fla., died May 13, 2008. He was born July 12, 1925, in Glenville, W.Va., and was the only child of James Erle Arbuckle and Lorena Lee Fries Arbuckle.

He graduated from Glenville High School in 1942. He enrolled at Glenville State College and completed two semesters before volunteering for service with the United States Army Air Corps. He earned his wings and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant at Hondo Air Force Base in Texas. He served with the Fifteenth (Strategic) Army Air Force, 460th Bombardment Group (Heavy), nicknamed the Black Panther, 761st Bomb Squadron in the Mediterranean Theatre. His unit attacked key targets throughout Italy, France, Germany, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Austria, Romania, Yugoslavia and Greece. From an American airbase located at Spinazzola, Italy, he flew 15 combat missions as a navigator aboard B-24 Liberator bombers. He was awarded the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Air Medal and the Purple Heart. He was honorably discharged from active military service in 1945 with the rank of First Lieutenant.

He held a B.A. degree in history from West Virginia University and earned an M.A. degree in European History from the same institution. In 1950, he graduated from Harvard Business School with the M.B.A. degree and ranked third in his class. He then returned to Glenville where he was employed by Kanawha Union Bank as its chief financial officer. He was also elected to a seat on the Bank's board of directors, which he held until 1966. That year, he resigned his position and board seat at the Bank to pursue other business interests. In 1977, he was re-elected to the Bank's board of directors. Shortly after West Virginia law was changed in 1982 to permit the creation of bank holding companies, he played the pivotal role in forming Heritage Bancorp, Inc. Both Kanawha Union Bank and the Weston National Bank were acquired by Heritage. He served as a member of the Heritage Board of Directors until 1988, when the company merged with United Bankshares, Inc., of Parkersburg, W.Va.

He was a past member of the Glenville Rotary Club. He was a member of Gilmer County Lodge No. 118, AF & AM, Valley of Parkersburg, Orient of West Virginia, Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, S.J., U.S.A., and the Nemises Shrine Temple of Parkersburg. He was a former member, deacon and trustee of the Glenville Presbyterian Church. He was a member and former vestryman of St. Mark's Episcopal Church of Haines City. He endowed the Ernest L. Arbuckle Chair at Harvard Business School. In 1996, he sailed to France aboard the RMS Queen Elizabeth 2, along with several hundred other World War II veterans, and attended the ceremonies that commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Normandy Invasion.

He married Edwina Blackwood Cowart on Aug. 31,1974. She died Jan. 23,1983. He married Norma Lee Neitzel Cardin on Oct. 5, 1985. She survives. He was also survived by three stepchildren and two first cousins once removed. On Wednesday, May 21, at 1 p.m., a memorial service will be held at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Haines City, Fla., Expressions of sympathy may be made to St. Mark's Episcopal Church, P. O. Clyde Bates

 

Clyde Bates, 86, of Ligonier, Ind., formerly of Belle and Chelyan, died May 10, 2008, at home after a long illness.

He was born Aug. 25, 1921, in Grayson, Ky., to the late George Bates and the late Ida Wilson Bates. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Ella Hopper. He married the late Lorrine Bragg, who died Dec. 31, 1974. He was a retired C&O railroad conductor. He was a World War II veteran and was a recipient of a Purple Heart. He was a member of the American Legion and V.F.W.

Left to cherish Clyde's life are daughter, Cheryl and Elroy Mast of Ligonier, Ind.; son, Jerry Bates of Columbus, Ohio; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

A private service will be held for Clyde. Burial will be in Montgomery Memorial Park, London, with military graveside rites provided by the V.F.W. Post 7695, Ansted.

Johnnie R. Bird

 

Johnnie R. Bird, 61, of Milton entered Heaven on Thursday, May 15, 2008, in the comfort of his home after a 3-year battle with cancer.

Born Nov. 13, 1946, in Hurricane, Johnnie was the son of the late Melvin and Faye Campbell Bird. Johnnie graduated in 1966 from Hurricane High School and was in the All State Orchestra for 3 years, playing trumpet. He served in the United States Air Force during Vietnam and has since devoted much of his time supporting veteran affairs and the community of Milton. Johnnie has been the commander of the American Legion, Post 139 in Milton for the past 5 years and the American Legion State Adjutant for the past 2 years. He truly loved the work he did with the American Legion and the members became his extended family.

He is survived by his wife, Robin Rowsey Bird; daughters, Regina and husband, Mike Lewis, of Scott Depot, Sherry Bird of Hurricane, Wendy Bird of Milton and Tiffani and husband, Tyler Bartram, of Milton; grandchildren, Mikey, Sierra, Celesta, Marli, and Layni; special nephews and niece, Chad, Colby, Skyler and Emerson Clagg; mother-in-law, Retha Rowsey; sister and brother-in-law, Tinker and Roger Clagg.

He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, veteran, commander, "brother" and friend. He will be truly missed by all. Visitation will be from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Wallace Funeral Home, Milton. Funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 17, at Wallace Funeral Home, Milton, by Pastor Mark Hessin. Burial will be in Forest Memorial Park, Milton. Betty Loftis Buscher born on May 31, 1932, went home to be with the Lord on May 15, 2008, after an extended illness while surrounded by her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Malcolm “Bud” Buscher; mother, Bertha Miller; and grandson, Matthew Gregory Kight.

She is survived by her children, who loved her dearly, and their spouses, Rodney and Shonette Loftis of Charleston, Judith Mullen of Cross Lanes, Robert and Wendy Coe-Loftis of Charleston, Gregory and Ruth Loftis of Nitro, Benjamin and Regina Loftis and Gary Loftis, all of Charleston; grandchildren, Ginger Barrick and her husband, Jason, and great- grandsons, Isaiah and Matthew Barrick, Sean Loftis and his wife, Mandi, and great-granddaughters, Jade and Gabbie Loftis, Jennifer Mullen-Thaxton and her husband, Christopher, Rodney Loftis II and great-granddaughter, Sierra Loftis, Sara Loftis, Cathy Loftis and great-grandson, Aidin Loftis and step-granddaughter, Dawn Walker.

She is survived by the following siblings, brothers, Austin Miller of Charleston, Herb Fitzsimmons of Nitro, Art “Butch” Miller of Phoenix City, Ala.; surviving sisters, Bonnie Mooney of St. Albans, Nellie Harper of Charleston and “sisters in spirit,” Toni Millar and Jackie Baker of The Villages, Fla.; a special cousin, Brenda Vilkins of South Charleston; and many nieces and nephews.

Left to treasure her memory are her dear friends, Roberta Jacks, Stan and Anna Cadd of The Villages, Fla., as well as many other friends and family including Bonnie Pugh of Sissonville.

Betty was the former owner of BB's Pizza Place, Charleston, a Red-Hatter and world traveler who loved to host dinner parties. She has lived alternately in Florida, Missouri and West Virginia since 1973. She was involved in fund-raising for Make A Wish Foundation.

Betty was an avid gardener who was happiest and felt “closest to God” in her garden.

A special thanks to her caregivers, Erin Haynes and niece, Bobbie Kay Goins. A heartfelt thank you from the family to Hospice, especially Carol Means and Sherry Stouffer.

Celebration of Betty's life will be 11 a.m. Saturday, May 17, at Cunningham-Parker-Johnson Funeral Home with the Rev. John Mason officiating. Burial will follow in Floral Hills Garden of Memories, Pocatalico.

Bernard J. Faulkner

 

Bernard J. “BJ“ Faulkner, 88, of Pocatalico died peacefully Wednesday, May 14, 2008, at home surrounded by his loving family.

He was a retired supervisor from Union Carbide Tech Center, South Charleston, and a member of the Rock Lake Presbyterian Church, South Charleston.

He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps in the Army of Occupation of Japan. “BJ” was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed bowling and golf. He also enjoyed working outside where he took great pride in his lawn. “BJ” was a loving husband, father and grandfather and will be sadly missed by his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John H. and Lura Mabe Faulkner; son, Keith Ray Faulkner; brother, David Faulkner; and a sister, Bessie Payne.

Surviving are wife, Nana B. Faulkner; sons and daughters-in-law, Roger Dale and Nancy Faulkner of Burke, Va., Robert Gale Faulkner and Ellen Schwepp of Oak Hill, Va.; daughter-in-law, Julie Faulkner of Renton, Wash.; brothers, Forest Faulkner of Milton, Edward A. Faulkner of Huntington, Johnny B. Faulkner of Florida, Jerry M. Faulkner of Albuquerque, N.M.; sisters, Jeanne Lyerla of St. Louis, Mo., Betty Thornton of Houston, Texas, Virginia Cook of Akron, Ohio, Merdith Gibson and Stella Bowles of Columbus, Ohio, Dorothy I. Ellison of Harpers Ferry; grandchildren, Stacey, Leigh, Meghan, Jonathan, Patrick, Geoffrey Faulkner.

Service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Good Shepherd Mortuary, South Charleston, with Dr. James Lutz of First Baptist Church of Hurricane officiating. Burial will be in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Friends may call two hours prior to the service at the mortuary.

Artiles "Buck" Hardway

 

Artiles “Buck” Hardway, 74, of St. Albans, passed away Tuesday, May 13, 2008, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston.

Buck served his country with the United States Navy from 1951 until 1963. He was stationed in Japan, New York City, and Alameda, Calif., before returning home to West Virginia where he worked and retired in 1995 from the former Bell Atlantic Telephone Company as a lineman.

Buck was preceded in death by his parents, Artiles and Ona (Boggs) Hardway and his five siblings.

He is survived by his loving wife, Yoshiko; daughter, Kiyomi and her husband, Jeff Irivani, of West Palm Beach, Fla.; four grandchildren, Mina, John, David and Sara Irivani. Buck is also survived by his brother, Chuck Hardway of Knoxville, Tenn.; many nieces, nephews and other family members and friends.

Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, 409 Sixth Avenue, St. Albans. Burial will follow in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Darrold E. Jones, 60, of Charleston went home to be with the Lord on Monday, May 12, 2008, at Hubbard Hospice House after a short illness.

He was a graduate of Stonewall Jackson High School in Charleston, Class of 1967. He worked several years for DOW BADISCHE/BASF Chemical Company, Williamsburg, Va. He retired as a Warehouse Manager from Clark Filter Systems with 17 years of service. He really liked his jobs and the many friends he made along the way in this life's journey.

Darrold was a devoted husband, brother, uncle, and great-uncle. He just recently became a Christian, loved his God, family and his many friends. He had had a zest for life, enjoyed the outdoors, camping and caving.

ALOHA until we meet again, not good-bye. He will be sadly missed by those he left behind, his wife of 38 years, Billie Jean Jones; sister, Wanda Williams; brother, Richard Maxwell; brother-in-law, Irving Ordonia of Hayes, Va.; special sister-in-law, Wanda Boettjer and husband, Byron Boettjer, of Beech Island, S.C. Also surviving are several cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nephews and countless friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lola and Albert Jones; sister, Helen Ordonia of Virginia; and brother and special friend, Mike Maxwell.

A tribute to the life of Darrold will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 17, at the Salvation Army Church, 301 Mary Street, Charleston, with the Major Bruce Williams officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Virginia D. King

 

Virginia D. King, 79, of Ravenswood, passed away on May 13, 2008, at Camden-Clark Memorial Hospital in Parkersburg.

She was born on March 25, 1929, in Chattaroy, a daughter of the late Miles K. and Chloe Connolly Diamond.

She was a member of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, both local and state, and was president from 1978 to 1980 and held many offices in that organization. She was a member of the state text book committee and was Henry J. Kaiser Teacher of the Year. She was also a member of the West Virginia Education Association, Jackson County Education Association, Parent-Teacher Association and National Education Association. She taught in both Mingo and Jackson Counties for a total of 42 ½ years initiating her Jackson County career in 1959.

She loved music, library, reading, children, teaching, doing charitable work, church, God, family and friends, cooking, embroidery, Coca-Cola, chocolate, poetry and loved our community.

She was a member of the Ravenswood Women's Club; Jackson General Hospital Auxiliary; Jackson County Retired Teachers; charitable worker, American Cancer Society; missions, Church of God-Boys Ranch; Ramey Children's Home; supported the blind and the March of Dimes; was also a member of the Calvary Baptist Church and was very active in church circles and teenage group. She was a member of the Ravenswood Church of God where she taught adult Bible class, teenage Sunday school class; was a church clerk and a member of the women's auxiliary group.

She was a graduate at 16 from Chattaroy High School in 1947, and was the Valedictorian. She received a Concord Teacher's degree, and began teaching school at the age of 18. She did post-graduate work at Marshall University.

She is survived by her son, Keith King of Evans; daughters, L. Carole King-Reeves and husband, Don, of Parkersburg, and Debby Pope and her husband, Nick, of Forest Hills, Ky.; brother, William Diamond of Lexington, Ky.; sister, Phyllis Layne of Hampton, Va.; grandchildren, Elizabeth King and Brooke King, both of Evans; brother-in-law, Joe King and his wife, Peggy; and sister-in-law, Osie King of Equality, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby J. King; her parents; brother-in-law, Thomas Layne and Charles King; and sister-in-law, LaVaughn Diamond.

Service will be held Saturday, May 17, at 1 p.m. at Roush Funeral Home, Ravenswood, with the Rev. Carl Mann officiating. Burial will follow in the Ravenswood Cemetery. Friends may visit the family at the funeral home on Friday, May 16, from 5 to 8 p.m.

Sharon W. Lovett

 

Sharon W. Lovett, 65, of Charleston, passed away on Wednesday, May 14, after a long, courageous battle with cancer.

A beautiful, intelligent, generous and fun-loving woman, Sherry touched many lives with her welcoming, warm personality. No party was ever the same if she wasn't there.

A successful businesswoman, who helped introduce art to Charleston, Sherry founded The Art Store, which she owned for 35 years until her retirement this past January. Many patrons of The Art Store undoubtedly have fond memories of their visits to the store, including the recent fall biennial art sales. In 2005, Sherry was honored at the Clay Center's Appalachian Corridors Juried Exhibition, and she has received and continues to receive honors for her contribution to the art community.

Though she had much to be proud of in her career, Sherry's true pride and joy were her three boys and her six grandchildren. Sherry was a dedicated mother and grandmother and she will be deeply missed by her family. We will never forget Sherry's cooking, storytelling and love of entertaining.

Sherry is survived by her three sons and their wives, Mark and Louise Margolis and their two daughters, Edith and Emily, of Dallas, Texas; Robert Margolis Knickrehm and Whitney Knickrehm and their three sons, Xionlong, Oliver and Isaac of Bellingham, Wash.; and Aric Margolis and Diana Panucci and their son, William, of Charleston; and countless faithful friends whom Sherry loved dearly.

The family would also like to extend special thanks to all of Sherry's friends who were so attentive to her, as well as to all the caretakers who watched over Sherry during her illness. Everyone's dedication and generosity is greatly appreciated.

A visitation honoring Sherry's life will be held on Friday, May 16, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Barlow-Bonsall Funeral Home, Charleston.

Lorenzo A. “Nick” Nicholson, 99, of Hurricane died May 14, 2008, at Broadmore Assisted Living, Hurricane.

Born May 5, 1909, in Anadarko, Ok., he was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Kathryn, and several brothers and sisters.

He was a retired chemical operator from Union Carbide Corporation, South Charleston, with 35 years of service. He also served in the United States Marine Corps during the later 1920s and early 1930s.

Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Don Parsons of Scott Depot.

Virginia Flick Phares, beloved mother of Diana Lynn Rustemeyer of Reston, Va., and Pamela June Phares of Charleston, sister of Chester A. Flick of Elkview, and grandmother of Marnie Amber Rustemeyer of New York City, found her place in heaven the morning of May 14, 2008. She was born on June 6, 1920, in Spencer, and spent most of her life in Charleston with her husband of 52 years, Earl Lynn Phares.

As a mother and grandmother, she gave unwavering inspiration, encouragement, hope, patience, devotion and love. “Aunt Jenny” and “Granny” to family and friends, Virginia was a caring, giving, and supportive friend to all who knew her. She was a devout Christian, a member of First Presbyterian Church and First Presbyterian Women's Club.

Virginia started and was the leader of the first Girl Scout Troop for Retarded girls in West Virginia. She was active in Special Olympics, both on the state and local levels for many years and was Secretary for the Kanawha County Special Olympics Advisory Council. Virginia dedicated freely her time and support to the advancement of individuals with special needs.

Visitation for family and friends will be Saturday evening, May 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. and funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 18, at Barlow Bonsall Funeral Home. Interment will be at Tyler Mountain Memorial Gardens.

Virginia has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Kanawha County Special Olympics or the Rainbow Class at First Presbyterian Church. Your contribution will exercise a compassionate call to stewardship and support people with special needs.

Almeda R. Seaman, 93, of Ravenswood, passed into the arms of the Lord on May 14, 2008, at Huntington Health and Rehab, Huntington, with her loving family surrounding her.

She was born Sept. 9, 1914, in Calhoun County, daughter of the late Richard Rothwell and Elizabeth Wells Rothwell.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Ravenswood. In 1946, she founded Almeda's in Ravenswood, which she and her husband Foster operated for many years. She was a lifelong Democrat and loved to vote in every election. One of her greatest joys in life was cooking for family and friends.

She is survived by her son, Stephen and his wife, Marialice, of Sandyville, their son and his wife, Stephen Seaman Jr. and Juli of Leesburg, Va., their daughter, Heidi Gamma and her husband, Nick, of Trumbull, Conn., and their daughter, Lillian Hyde Gamma; daughter, Mary Lutz and her husband, Paul, their son, Aaron Lutz, of Huntington, their daughter and her husband, Meredith Starr and Shawn, their twin daughters, Emma and Alexandra Starr, all of Jacksonville, Fla.; daughter, Jane Sanders and her husband, Jack, their son, Larry Walaszczyk, his daughter, Kera, their daughter, Melanie and her fiancée, Mike Jech, and their daughter, Madison, all of Huntington; and daughter, Joan Grimmitt and her husband, Bob, of Ravenswood, their sons, Rob of Chicago, Ill., and Brandon of Ravenswood.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Elizabeth Rothwell; her husband, Foster L. Seaman; and a daughter, Martha.

Service will be 3 p.m. Friday, May 16, at Roush Funeral Home, Ravenswood, with the Rev. Jonathan Villers officiating. Burial will be in Ravenswood Cemetery. Friends may visit the family at the funeral home on Friday, May 16, from 1to 3 p.m., the time of service.

A special thank you to her grandson, Larry Walaszczyk for his devoted care and to the Huntington Health and Rehab.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church, 215 Ann St., Ravenswood, WV 26164.
