Wesleyan freshman struck, killed while riding bike

UPSHUR COUNTY, W.Va. -- A college student was hit by a truck and killed while riding his bicycle.

Roger Lee Harrison Jr.
Upshur County Sheriff's deputies arrested the driver and charged him with driving under the influence.

Around 8:50 p.m. Wednesday, deputies responding to the accident on W.Va. 20 found Daniel Duncan, 18, of Norwalk, Ohio, lying on the road with severe injuries. Duncan died from his injuries.

Police said Duncan was riding a bike north on the highway when he was struck by the southbound truck driven by Roger Lee Harrison, Jr., 23, of French Creek. Harrison left the scene of the accident, according to the sheriff's department.

Deputies later found Harrison a few miles away in the town of Adrian and arrested him. He is charged with an accident resulting in death and driving under the influence resulting in death. Both are felony charges.

Duncan, who was a freshman at Wesleyan College, was involved in several school activities, even though he had been on campus for only about three weeks, said college spokesman Bob Skinner.

The political science major was a member of the school's honors program, jazz ensemble, concert chorale and cycling club, Skinner said.

The college's counseling staff is working to console students who knew Duncan, Skinner said.
