West Virginia may be just a flyover state fight?

I would love to see the 2008 presidential campaign hoofing through West Virginia. It's exciting when the biggest story in the country arrives on your doorstep.

Plus, it's generally good for the state for the next president to know more about us.

But I suspect it's not going to happen this time around.

I hope I'm wrong, but when you look at the numbers and the states at play across the country, you have to wonder whether Barack Obama or John McCain believes it's worth their while to spend much time here between now and November.

Actually, neither candidate is very popular in the state right now, according to pollster Scott Rasmussen of Rasmussen Reports.

McCain has the support of 45 percent of the voters, compared with 37 percent for Obama with 18 percent either undecided or supporting someone else.

The reason, Rasmussen says, is that Hillary Clinton spent a lot of time campaigning here before the primary election beating up on Obama and McCain.

"It will take awhile before that wears off," Rasmussen told me.

Still, it would appear that Obama is within striking distance; he's only eight points down.  But Obama's negatives are extremely high here, especially considering West Virginia has twice as many Democrats as Republicans.

Rasmussen found that 35 percent of the state's voters have a "very unfavorable" opinion of Obama, while 22 percent have a "somewhat unfavorable" view.

"Other than Hillary Clinton nationally, we rarely see politicians getting to this level, unless they've been president for awhile, like George W. Bush," said Rasmussen.

Clearly, West Virginia is leaning toward McCain, though CNN will not put West Virginia in the "solid McCain" category.

I'll bet Al Gore wished he would have campaigned in West Virginia.

If Obama loses by 5 electoral votes, the joke will be on him, like it was on Gore.

I don't think West Virginia should completely rule out some attention from Obama. First, he knows Hillary Clinton won in West Virginia and he is trying to win those voters. Second, his campaign is planning a 50 state effort. Whether he will make it to all 50 has not been decided but I would not be surprised to find him at least making a short visit closer to the election. He knows there are more Democrats than Republicans in WV so it is fertile ground. It would be good if more West Virginians were open minded and at least listened closely to his ideas. He is the better candidate for states like West Virginia than John McCain. After all, what has George Bush done for West Virginia after winning the state twice?

Be careful what you wish (vote) for; you may not like the outcome. Also, Congress has a lower approval rating the W. The cure to most of our ills begins by voting out 435 House Reps and 33 Senators in the next election--including yours and mine! The current bunch cannot work together for the good of all of us. They're afraid someone else will get the credit and won't be re-elected. So, let's get rid of them and start with a new bunch. If they can't, get rid of them. Sooner or later they'll get the message. This isn't compromise governance; it's slash and burn with us as the victims. When will the voters understand this and get rid of these people. Congress is the problem and we're the solution--the only solution!

Of course, why wouldn't WV voters, known for their insightful presidential picks, chose McCain? After all he's promised a continuation of the Bush's Iraq war (100 years ring a bell?), and Lord knows we all supportted Bush.
McCain (after previously opposing the cuts) has promised a continuation of Bush's tax cuts for the wealthiest among us, and we rich WV'ians can really use that!
McCain has a healthcare plan, that looks suspiciously like the Bush healthcare plan, and we know just what that has meant to America's uninsured. Well, actually the uninsured number has gone steadily up since Bush has been in office, but that's a minor thing.
McCain has promised to continue spying on Americans and torturing foreigners, how great is that!

All in all, sounds like a WV winner to me!!
