Your Vents: Friday, Sept. 5, 2008

- In regard to the presidential election: I've been doing research and I think it will be a really close election but I think McCain will win. It could have been reversed if Obama had picked Hillary Clinton.

- A job is a job is a job. Every job has hazards. If the Charleston police and fire department pensions were not so high, the fund would not be underfunded. I think the place to start is to reduce the pensions of the firemen and policemen. Sure, they do work that's dangerous, but we all do.

- The Sunday-Gazette Mail showed that Alaska knows how to get state revenue from the energy companies. Our Legislature and the governor should take heed and do the same thing that Alaska is doing.

- You ignorant Republicans that think gas prices started skyrocketing just two years ago when the Democrats took over are blind. Everything, gas, food, the federal deficit, all started up eight years ago when George Bush took over. Get your facts straight.

- This country was a super power and we are not one now. Yes, we still have the best military in the world, but what made us a super power was our oil, natural gas, coal, metals, industry, infrastructure, research and people. The environmentalists have taken care of oil, coal, natural gas and metals and the Clintons and the Democrats took care of the industry with NAFTA, starting the exiting of our businesses. If it weren't for our strong military, we would have been overrun years ago.

- I can't help it. I like President Bush. Since day one, he has done what he thought was right. That's what he was hired to do. He was not hired to bow down to pressure from the people or definitely foreigners. I have not agreed with everything that he did, but I realize that he has had to deal with circumstances that had never been faced before and has kept us safe ever since. I pay lower taxes than ever and have gotten several rebate checks. Nobody else will ever do that.

- Have you ever noticed that the Democrats are always saying that the Republicans don't do enough to advance minorities? Yet when a Republican nominates a black, Hispanic, Asian, or female for an office, the Democrats pick them apart?

- All these right-wingers keep warning us that Obama is a liberal. I certainly hope so. We can't afford another eight years of conservatism like the past eight. That in itself should be reason enough to vote for Obama.

- With all due respect to Mr. Obama, how can he be identified as an African-American? I always was under the impression that an African-American had a black father and a black mother. He does not fit the definition.

- I don't want one more penny of my tax money going to rebuild New Orleans again.  Nobody in their right mind would ever build a city below the water level when they are surrounded by water. Move it or lose it, but don't waste money rebuilding it.

- I would like to compliment Cummings Collection in Hurricane for having it announced over the loudspeaker at the Hurricane-Winfield football game that anyone parked in their parking lot will be towed at the owner's expense. Mind you it was after 7 p.m., and the office closes at 4 p.m. so it's not like we were preventing them from conducting business. Also people have parked in that lot for years during football games.

There are millions of Americans more qualified for the White House than Sarah Palin. 6 colleges in 6 years for Palin? Journalism degree from a public university? This is VP material? This is a 9-5 job material at best. If America votes this ticket in, we are only continuing to write our downfall. But, these same people voted for Bush twice so what do we expect? Some people just shouldn't vote.

Game-goers park on my mom's street in Nitro all the time, even though there are several signs that say "Residential Only". Last summer, I was caring for my terminally ill father. When I was bringing groceries home and had no place to park, I was told by a game-goer who I found out later was a city commissioner (has since been voted out), that the sign didn't really mean that, and I should park in the yard. His daughter was parked on the yellow curb, right by the sign.
