Marshall fans and brothers Carlos and Mark Campbell have established a trust fund to help the parents of former Thundering Herd defensive end Johnathan Goddard pay for his funeral expenses, which total $13,000.
Goddard, 27, died Sunday morning from injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident Saturday night in Clay County, Fla. The Jacksonville native didn't have life insurance, according to the Campbell brothers.
In addition to his parents, Johnnie and Kathi, Goddard is survived by his four children: 8-year-old daughter Baylee, 4-year-old son Johnathan Jr. and 10-month-old twin brother and sister Zachary and Zoe.
"It just felt like it was the right thing to do," Mark Campbell said. "His parents are aware of it, and they are extremely grateful. Even if we don't raise a lot of money, they appreciate the gesture and the thought of it."
Donations can be sent to The Johnathan Goddard Bereavement Fund, c/o Chase Bank, 1000 5th Avenue, Huntington, WV 25701. They also can be made through PayPal at goddardbereavementf...@suddenlink.net.
If the contributions exceed the funeral expenses, the extra money will be donated to the Big Green Scholarship Foundation in Goddard's name, the brothers said. A scholarship in his name is pending.
Goddard was the Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 2004, when he led the nation with 16 sacks and 28 tackles for loss.
Goddard earned first-team All-America honors from the Football Writers Association of America, CBS Sports and College Football News and second-team All-America accolades from Walter Camp and The Associated Press that season. He is the only Thundering Herd defensive player to receive Division I-A All-America honors.
Goddard also was the first player from a non-Bowl Championship Series conference to become a finalist for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, which is given to the nation's top defensive player.
The Detroit Lions selected Goddard in the sixth round of the National Football League Draft in 2005. The Indianapolis Colts signed Goddard in 2006, and he was injured but on their roster for their Super Bowl XLI victory in 2007.
Goddard, whose professional career was plagued by injuries, most recently played for the Arena Football League's Colorado Crush.
