Football auction online added to Goddard benefit

HUNTINGTON -- Marshall University football fans have devised another money-making plan in their ongoing effort to help the parents of former Thundering Herd All-America defensive end Johnathan Goddard pay for his funeral service, which cost almost $13,000.

There is an eBay auction for a football autographed by Goddard, 27, who died in a motorcycle accident on June 15 near his hometown of Jacksonville, Fla.

The auction will end July 5. All proceeds will go toward the bereavement fund that Marshall fans and brothers Carlos and Mark Campbell started for Goddard's parents.

Interested bidders are asked to go to eBay and search "Johnathan Goddard autographed football" to find the item.

The football was donated by Atlanta residents and Marshall fans Tom and Carol Menders, who won it at an event a few years ago.

Goddard was the Mid-American Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 2004, when he led the nation with 16 sacks and 28 tackles for loss.

Goddard earned first-team All-America honors from the Football Writers Association of America, CBS Sports and College Football News and second-team All-America accolades from Walter Camp and The Associated Press that season. He is the only Thundering Herd defensive player to receive Division I-A All-America honors.

Goddard must have had a grand funeral for $13,000 sorry but that seems like a bit much, I hope some of this money goes to help his wife and children.
