Local man arrested in Newsome shooting

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Huntington police arrested a Charleston man Sunday afternoon in the shooting death of former Marshall football player Donte Newsome, 25, according to the Herald-Dispatch.

Chief Skip Holbrook of the Huntington Police Department told the newspaper investigators arrested Jerel Addison Garner, 26, on a first-degree murder charge Sunday at 1 p.m. He was taken to Western Regional Jail, where he remains without bond.

Police picked up Garner after he was released from St. Mary's Medical Center, according to the Herald-Dispatch. He was shot multiple times during the altercation, which occurred Saturday at 3 a.m. outside the Fluid Nightclub on 4th Avenue, the newspaper reported. It is unclear who shot him.

Another former Marshall football player, Curtis Keyes, 24, also was shot in the altercation. However, he was treated and released from St. Mary's on Saturday.

Officers also are looking for another man who was involved in the incident, the newspaper reported.

"There was a verbal exchange between the parties," Holbrook told the Herald-Dispatch, "and when they left the club, it escalated."

Newsome, who came to Marshall from Chesapeake, Va., played tailback and linebacker for the Thundering Herd from 2002 through 2005. He remained in the Tri-State and played for the Huntington Heroes in 2006 and 2007.

He was playing for the Amarillo (Texas) Dusters of the arena football2 league this year. The Dusters were idle last week.

"I don't see how something like this happened to somebody like him," said Marshall senior football player Emmanuel Spann, who was a true freshman when Newsome was a junior. "He got along with everybody. It's real sad. He wasn't a bad person; he was a good person.

"He will definitely be missed."

What I was saying is that whom ever did the shooting doesn't mean that they are THUGS!! An GOD knows it is a TRAGIC for all that is involved. We are so quick to judge people is all I am saying. If you wasn't there we really don't no what happen we can only speculate. REALDEAL I meant no harm. All I was saying is what happen to the compassion in our hearts for one another? Why do we think that carrying GUNS is COOL or threatening people makes us King or something. How I wish things where like they use to be everyone looked out for each other an cared. Now its I am going to get them before they get me attitude. We seem to be killing off our young people an if we keep it up who is going to be left to teach our children an your children that this isn't the way.IT ISN'T THUGS THAT KILLS ITS PEOPLE...

I don't think he was talking about the deceased, he was talking about the person that pulled the trigger. But hey, you might no more than we do.

realdeal that is terrible to say when someone lost there life. Regardless to if they where THUGS or not it doesn't mean he deserved to DIE.. That is cruel for you to say something like that, that young man had a family who will miss him. I wonder if you would be feeling that way if it was someone in your family. You need to think before you say things like that it could happen to someone you LOVE. Realdeal I hope you aren't that COLD HEARTED if so I will keep you in my prayers. May GOD bless you an yours....
