WVU bows to Youngstown, 13-9

MORGANTOWN -- Youngstown State outlasted West Virginia 13-9 on Monday evening in a non-conference baseball game at Hawley Field.

What originally was scheduled as a doubleheader was changed to one nine-inning contest.

The visiting Penguins (20-30) scored twice in the first inning, five in the third and three in the fourth to mount a 10-0 lead.

The Mountaineers (35-16) battled back to 11-9, scoring four runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and four in the seventh.

Each team collected 14 hits. Adam Kalafos (5-3) was the winning pitcher and Bobby Thompson (0-1) the loser. WVU used five hurlers and Youngstown three.

Eric Marzec, Youngstown's designated hitter, slammed three home runs and a single, scored four runs and had six RBIs. Teammate Anthony Porter also hit a round-tripper.

Outfielder Austin Markel led WVU with a home run and two singles. Justin Parks and Tyler Kuhn each had two hits and two RBI, while Mark Dvoroznak chipped in two hits and one RBI.

WVU will ends the regular season in a three-game Big East Conference series at Cincinnati beginning Thursday.
