Huggins gets early commitment from 6-10 Ohioan

MORGANTOWN -- Perhaps no one was more surprised about Storm Stanley's commitment to West Virginia basketball's recruiting class of 2010 on Tuesday than Storm Stanley himself.

"It did come quickly," he said. "I hadn't even talked to West Virginia really except for the beginning of the AAU season. This is really kind of surprising, but I'm glad it's happened, of course."

Stewart, a rising junior from Saint Francis de Sales High in Toledo, Ohio, had no other offers and hadn't even heard from WVU before the end of April. He's the second commitment for his class.

"Right now he's a 6-foot-10 athletic kid ready to compete in the Big East," said Mike Duncan, President/Director of the Ohio Basketball Club, which is Stanley's AAU organization. "He's only going to get stronger. He doesn't graduate for another two years, so he'll get bigger and better. He's got a very good upside."

He's also got a lot to learn about WVU. He hasn't visited the campus yet and won't play in the Hoop Group's Summer Jam Fest AAU tournament next week.

"I looked up their campus online and it's a beautiful campus from what I've seen," he said. "I like that and I like that it's one of the premier programs in the country."

Stanley is joined on the 2010 WVU commitment list by Poca guard Noah Cottrill, who committed last July 1 and is ranked by Rivals.com as the No. 11 point guard and the No. 45 player in the class.

Stanley and Cottrill play together on the 16-and-under OBC team.

"He's a great kid and a great player," Cottrill said. "He's young and he's got a lot to learn, but Coach Huggins thinks he can turn him into a great player and I believe he can, too. I mean, he's 6-10 and he's 15 years old. We got a really good player."

Cottrill said he's only played three events with Stanley and wasn't recruiting him to commit to WVU.

"It came out of the blue," Cottrill said. "I'm excited. He's a banger who gets his points off rebounds."

Stanley, who has a 4.3 grade-point average, didn't know what his statistics were during his sophomore year, yet was quick to report Saint Francis was 14-7 and lost in double-overtime to an eventual Division I semifinalist in the state playoffs. He said he wasn't a prolific scorer, but was more concerned with a specific role on the team.

"I like to clean up inside, I like to post up and I'm trying to work on stepping outside a little bit," he said. "As of right now, I'm basically an inside player."

Huggins approved of what he saw as Stanley helped his team win the bronze division of its age group at Cincinnati's It Takes 5ive tournament this week.

"He loves the game and works hard on his game and he's grown by leaps and bounds in one year," Duncan said. "I think it's a good early steal for Huggins because he's definitely going to be Big East-ready when he comes out. He's going to be a monster."

Beautiful campus? This kid hasn't been outside of Ohio much. If you want to live on a side of a mountain it would be great. He'll wake up! GO CATS!
