Serbia too much for United States, Mountaineers' Butler

BELGRADE, Serbia. - Despite receiving double-digit scoring efforts from four players, the United States' World University Games team suffered a 98-82 setback against host Serbia in the Serbia International Invitational on Sunday night.

Ohio State's Evan Turner scored a team-high 16 points for the United States. Villanova's Corey Fisher followed with 12 points. Penn State's Talor Battle and West Virginia's Da'Sean Butler added 10 points apiece.

The round-robin tournament concludes today, with the United States (1-1) facing Russia (1-1) at 12:30 p.m. and Serbia (2-0) facing Canada (0-2) at 3 p.m.

Local team wins state rugby tournament

The River Valley Vipers won the Almost Heaven 7's Tournament over the weekend in Fairmont.

The rugby team has players from the Charleston and Huntington areas, including Zach Goad, Scott Izat, Cody Tominak, and Eric Gerencir. It beat Fairmont State 29-0, West Virginia University 24-22 and Weirton 19-12 in the championship game.

The tournament featured a seven-on-seven format rather than the normal 11-on-11 format.

I keep forgetting to count Jason Williams as a member of the Herd. He was really on no team when he was drafted, having left Marshall for Florida, and then getting kicked off the Florida team before he was drafted.

I pretty much think of him as a Dupont star who had enough moxie to make it in the pros on his own.

I had forgotten about Tamar Slay. How long did he stick in the pros?

Did Russell Lee play many games? He was a great college player.

Marshall had some dynamic teams in the early 70s. I hope they can get back to that point someday. They were fun to watch then.

Mountaineer basketball dropped off for a couple of decades. Then Beilein started it going, and Huggins is taking us back to the top.

Basketball can turn around quickly, under the right circumstances.

I hope that Marshall can get back there someday. They are starting to show some improvement again.

banglijk...what is ironic is that fact the Puke Green states "Beat dayton then talk to us jerks!" but they did lose to Dayton (as well as many many many bad teams). We crush Huntington Middle School (again) in basketball and as always in football, and every other sports as well.

Point is, WVU is better in every sport, every year and always will be. We are going in the right direction, The Burgeoning Turds are going backwards.

It also is evident from Puke Green's awful grammar and sentence structure that she did in fact graduate from Huntington Middle School. This is shown by Puke Green referring to herself and the "fans" of HMS as jerks....well done.

Marshall has had 14 (1 player played 1 game in the ABA) players play 2,634 games in the ABA & NBA. This includes Jason Williams who played one year at MU before transferring to Florida and Tamar Slay, the most recent MU alum to play. Hal Greer (1122), Jason Williams(678), George Stone (259 in the ABA) and Mike D'Antoni (130) played more than 100 games. Jason Williams and Russell Lee were 1st round picks. D'Antoni, Greer, and Slay were second round picks.

For WVU, 13 players have played a combined 3,123 games in the NBA & ABA. Jerry West (932), Ron Williams (516), Rod Thorn (466), Rod Hundley (431), Fred Schaus (334), and Lowes Moore (112) have played more than 100 career games. Alexander will join that club next year, barring injury, especially with Richard Jefferson being traded.

WVU first round picks include West, Williams, Alexander, Hundley, Thorn, and Mark Williams.
