John F. Santrock

John F. Santrock died September 5, 2008, after a long, courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease.
John F. Santrock leaves a long and highly positive legacy of contributions to his community, country, and church. Mr. Santrock spent more than 30 years as a teacher and principal at Nitro High School and then as superintendent of Kanawha County Schools. The many students, teachers, and principals he taught and mentored benefited enormously from his talent, vision, and caring.
His service to his community also leaves an outstanding legacy. He was director of the Nitro Community Park and was the Nitro City recorder. Mr. Santrock served in leadership positions on a wide range of community organizations, including the Lion's Club and the Salvation Army.
He also served his country with honor and pride. John Santrock was a Lieutenant in the United States Army and was part of the World War II invasion that followed the attack on Normandy beaches one month after D-Day. Wounded by enemy gunfire, he was captured and became a prisoner of war, and was marched through the streets of Berlin by his captors, but soon after escaped as he and several of his fellow soldiers reached safety in Poland. Santrock was awarded the Purple Heart for service to his country.
A deeply religious person, he was a member of the First Baptist Church of Nitro for more than seven decades, serving in numerous positions, including Chairman of the Deacon Board.
Mr. Santrock also was an avid sports fan and an outstanding tennis player, winning a number of West Virginia state championships. He was a longtime member of the Charleston Tennis Club.
John Santrock was born November 17, 1918, at Heizer Creek, and lived his entire life in Nitro. He received B.A. and M.A. degrees in education from Marshall University.
John Santrock has been a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ruth Smith Santrock; two children, John W. Santrock of Plano, Texas, and Shauna Hampshire of Davie, Fla.; three grandchildren, Tracy Santrock of Carey, N.C., Jennifer Santrock of San Antonio, Texas, and Stephanie Hampshire of Davie, Fla.; and three great-grandchildren, Jordan Bowles of Carey, N.C., and Alex and Luke Bellucci of San Antonio, Texas. The family owes a special gratitude to Lisa Brown for her loving care in the past year.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, September 9, at the First Baptist Church of Nitro, 22nd St. & 2nd Ave., followed by a service at 8 p.m. with Dr. Lawrence Hoptry officiating. There will be a private burial at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.
