Mrs. Shirley Ruth Burker, loving wife, mother, grandmother and aunt, 67, of Browns Creek, Tornado, passed away September 6, 2008, at home.

Mrs. Burker is retired from Nitro Senior Center and a friend to all who knew her.

She is survived by her husband, Lee Burker; children, Timothy and Steven Burker and Susan Pomeroy; and 10 grandchildren. She is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews.

A tribute to the life of Shirley will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 9, 2008, at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor James Cash officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Ridge Cemetery; Hurricane Creek Road.

Joseph Arthur Davis

 

Joseph Arthur Davis, 63, of St. Albans died Friday September 5, 2008, at Hubbard Hospice House after a brave battle with cancer.

He was born November 25, 1944, in Charleston, the son of Burton W. Davis and Florence Stephenson Davis.

Joseph was a 1962 graduate of St. Albans High School, 1968 graduate of West Virginia State College and a 1973 graduate of Marshall University. He taught Industrial Arts at John Adams Junior High for 33 years and retired in 2002 from the Kanawha County Board of Education.

Joseph was a Christian. He attended Abney Street Church of God, St. Albans, where the Rev. Jack Lawrence is the pastor, since 1961.

Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Carolyn McVicker Davis; son, Jonathan Davis and his wife Lori of St. Albans; daughter, Tamara and her husband Jeremy Harpold of St. Albans; grandchildren, Kayla and Courtney Davis and Andrew Harpold.

Joseph will be greatly missed by our family. He was a gracious man to his wife, children and grandchildren, who admired his strength, wisdom and perseverance. His encouragement and guidance was a blessing to us all.

The family would like to express their appreciation to the nurses, physicians, and staff of Hubbard Hospice House for their care and support during Mr. Davis' period of declining health and to our family doctor, I. Elaine Moore, and her staff.

The funeral service will be held at 12 p.m. Tuesday September 9, 2008, at Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, 409 Sixth Avenue, St. Albans, with the Rev. Arley Cravens officiating. Burial will follow in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to service on Tuesday.

Alfred Alonzo Hatfield

 

Alfred Alonzo Hatfield, 69, of Danese, was a born-again Christian and proud member of Green Valley Methodist Church, who walked through Heaven's gate on Saturday, September 6, 2008.

Alfred had worked hard building a successful trucking business until his retirement. He was always willing to lend an ear and give advice when asked. Bluegrass music was a passion of his that broadened his huge circle of friends. His presence will be missed by family and friends, but none greater than his wife of 48 years, Audrey June Martin Hatfield, whom he married November 12, 1959.

Alfred was born January 6, 1939,at Lawton, the son of the late William Alfred and Ethel Marguerite Bragg Hatfield. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Irene Geneva Hatfield Shuck and Lucille Elizabeth Hatfield Kahn.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Alfreda Smith of New Bern, N.C., Sheila Morphis and husband Kevin of Thomasville, N.C., and June Stewart and husband Eric of Summersville; four grandchildren, Adam Bowman and wife Keri of Beckley, Chastity Bowman of Summersville, Paige Smith of New Bern, N.C., and Jenna Hamrick and husband Brian of Summersville; one great-grandchild, Jakob Bowman of Beckley; and great-grandson to be, Isaac Hamrick, due to arrive in October. He also had several nieces and nephews.

The service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, September 9, 2008, at Wallace & Wallace Chapel in Rainelle with the Rev. Jessie Pope, the Rev. Allen Whitt, and the Rev. Sherman McCombs officiating. Burial will follow at Wallace Memorial Cemetery, Clintonville.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home.

Joyce Pauley Higginbotham, 69, of Bunnell, Fla., formerly of South Charleston, W.Va., died Thursday, September 4, 2008, in Florida after a long illness.

She was a 1956 graduate of Washington District High School.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, W. Randall Higginbotham; two sons, James R. Higginbotham of Cross Lanes and Dwayne A. Higginbotham (Sherry) of South Charleston; sister, Vicki Pauley (David) of South Charleston; brother, Michael Pauley (Linda) of Alum Creek; four grandchildren, Jami Johnson (Henry), J.R. Higginbotham, Michelle Edens and K.C. Higginbotham; three great-grandchildren, Aaron, Henry and Caleb; three nieces; and three nephews.

The service will be held in Florida.

Mildred Bernice Huffman, 80, of Elkview went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, September 6, 2008, in Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston.

She was a member of Elkview Baptist Church, where she faithfully served as a choir member; loved her super senior Sunday school class and taught the kindergarten Sunday school class. Bernice formerly worked for Rose City Press, Smith Grocery in Big Chimney and Woodrum's Furniture Store.

She was preceded in death by her parents, L.E. and Esteline Hayes Estep; son, Steven Paul Huffman; sisters, Dorothy Robinson, Mable Anderson, Mary Nida, and Ruby Roth Clark; brothers, Russell Estep, Don Estep and Gene Estep.

Bernice is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, L.V. “Jack” Huffman Jr.; sons, Chuck Huffman and wife Kathey of Mechanicsville, Va., and Jeff Huffman and wife Kathy of Culloden; daughter, Bev Stevens and husband Denny of Pinch; brother, Marvin Estep and wife Ginny of Elkview; sister, Kay Oberer of Greenville, Ohio; grandchildren, Sarah Bailey, Jennifer Whittington, Ryan Stevens, Kimberly Lund, Erin Terry, Andy Stevens, and Stephanie Huffman; Three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews also survive her.

The family would like to give a special thank you to Dr. Brown at CAMC Memorial Hospital and the Hubbard Hospice House for the care and concern that was given to Bernice and the family during their time of need.

The service will be held at 2 pm Tuesday, September 9, 2008, at the Elkview Baptist Church, 910 Main St., Elkview, WV 25071, with the Rev. Bobby Sizemore and the Rev. David Keeney officiating. Burial will be in the Sand Run Cemetery, Elkview.

George Cleo Morton, 88, of Mount Lookout, formerly of Lizemores, passed away Saturday, September 6, 2008, at the VA Medical Center, Beckley.

He was born November 25, 1919, at Lizemores to the late George Monroe and Martha Alice Smith Morton. He was a retired employee from Clonch Industries at Dixie. He was a World War II Army veteran serving on the Burma Road Supply Route, a member of Ansted VFW Post 7695, and a member of the Bethel Baptist Church, Lizemores.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Lena K. Nichols.

Survivors include his caregivers and nephew, Jim and Doris Nichols of Mount Lookout; special niece, Julia Nichols of Mount Lookout; other nephews, Paul Nichols of Elkhart, Ind., William Nichols of South Charleston, Douglas Nichols of Fayetteville, and Greg Nichols of Grotto, Va.; and niece, Mary Doyle of Florence, Ky.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 10, 2008, at Pennington Funeral Home Chapel, Gauley Bridge, with the Rev. Carl E. Burrows officiating. Interment will be at Sunset Cemetery, Fola, with Military graveside service conducted by Ansted VFW Post 7695.

John F. Santrock

 

John F. Santrock died September 5, 2008, after a long, courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease.

John F. Santrock leaves a long and highly positive legacy of contributions to his community, country, and church. Mr. Santrock spent more than 30 years as a teacher and principal at Nitro High School and then as superintendent of Kanawha County Schools. The many students, teachers, and principals he taught and mentored benefited enormously from his talent, vision, and caring.

His service to his community also leaves an outstanding legacy. He was director of the Nitro Community Park and was the Nitro City recorder. Mr. Santrock served in leadership positions on a wide range of community organizations, including the Lion's Club and the Salvation Army.

He also served his country with honor and pride. John Santrock was a Lieutenant in the United States Army and was part of the World War II invasion that followed the attack on Normandy beaches one month after D-Day. Wounded by enemy gunfire, he was captured and became a prisoner of war, and was marched through the streets of Berlin by his captors, but soon after escaped as he and several of his fellow soldiers reached safety in Poland. Santrock was awarded the Purple Heart for service to his country.

A deeply religious person, he was a member of the First Baptist Church of Nitro for more than seven decades, serving in numerous positions, including Chairman of the Deacon Board.

Mr. Santrock also was an avid sports fan and an outstanding tennis player, winning a number of West Virginia state championships. He was a longtime member of the Charleston Tennis Club.

John Santrock was born November 17, 1918, at Heizer Creek, and lived his entire life in Nitro. He received B.A. and M.A. degrees in education from Marshall University.

John Santrock has been a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Ruth Smith Santrock; two children, John W. Santrock of Plano, Texas, and Shauna Hampshire of Davie, Fla.; three grandchildren, Tracy Santrock of Carey, N.C., Jennifer Santrock of San Antonio, Texas, and Stephanie Hampshire of Davie, Fla.; and three great-grandchildren, Jordan Bowles of Carey, N.C., and Alex and Luke Bellucci of San Antonio, Texas. The family owes a special gratitude to Lisa Brown for her loving care in the past year.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, September 9, at the First Baptist Church of Nitro, 22nd St. & 2nd Ave., followed by a service at 8 p.m. with Dr. Lawrence Hoptry officiating. There will be a private burial at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

Mrs. June Saul, 86, formerly of Oak Hill died September 6, 2008.

Her parents; eight siblings; and her husband, Wilson H. Saul, preceded her in death.

She was a member of the Oak Hill United Methodist Church, where she served as treasurer for many years.

Her sister-in-law, Mae Patrick of East Bank; brother and sister-in-law, Carl and Kathleen Patrick of Kanawha City; and numerous nieces and nephews, survive her.

Howard Lanny “Scotty” Scott, 67, of Delaware, Ohio, died Saturday morning, Sept. 7, 2008, at the Delaware Court Health Care Center.

He was born May 9, 1941, in McKeesport, Pa., to Howard and Elva Miller Scott. He was an electrical engineer for Lucent Technologies in Columbus, Ohio, and had attended William Street United Methodist Church, Delaware, Ohio. He was very involved with Youth for Christ, Bible study, and a volunteer with Emmaus Ministries and an active senior volunteer working with the aging community.

He is survived by two sons, Gary Scott of Columbus, Ohio, and Tom (Kathy) Scott of Delaware, Ohio; stepdaughter, Lisa Pickney of Reynoldsburg, Ohio; stepson, Todd (Nicole) Pickney of Dublin, Ohio; five grandchildren, Sarah, Joey, Courtney, Joshua, and Justin; two sisters, Joyce Elaine (Terry G.) Swanson of Charleston, W.Va., and Kathy Kosarek of Meadville, Pa.; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, September 9, at Rodman Neeper Funeral Home, 1510 W. William St., Delaware, Ohio. A Service of Remembrance will follow at 7 p.m.

Mr. William Shorte Jr., 83, of Charleston was called home to be with the Lord on Saturday, September 6, 2008, after a long illness.

He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theatre and was a member of VFW Post No. 8195.

William was a member of the Teamsters Union, Local No. 175 and retired from Chemical Leaman Tank Lines with 22 years of service.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years, Kate Shorte; his father Willie; mother Pearl; brothers, Gerald Shorte, Paul Shorte, Harry Milam, and Lake Milam; and sister. Beatrice Williams.

William is survived by sons, Richard and his wife Elaine of Charleston, Gary and his wife Donna of Scott Depot, and Billy and his wife Anna of St. Albans; daughters, Karen Winter and her husband Bob of Cross Lanes, Sherry Harmon and her husband Bobby of South Charleston, and Debbie Miller and her husband David of Cross Lanes; fifteen grandchildren; and thirty one great-grandchildren.

A celebration of his life will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, September 8, 2008, with the Rev. Bernard Toppings officiating. Entombment with military graveside rites will follow in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

Doris Carol Webb, 68, of Spencer died September 6, 2008, at Roane General Hospital in Spencer.

She was born October 9, 1939, in Roane County, a daughter of the late Squire and Sybil Fields Young. She was retired from Foodland and was formerly employed at Kellwood Company and First National Bank for several years. She was a former Democrat of the Year and enjoyed football, bowling and cooking for everyone and had given her life to the Lord.

She is survived by her husband, Hershel L. Webb; two daughters, Janifer Carpenter and Lisa McGlothlin, both of Spencer; two sons, Jeff and Steve “Porky” Webb, both of Spencer; two sisters, Norma Jean Richards of Lancaster, Ohio, and Connie Allman of Columbus, Ohio; two brothers, William “Bill” and Robert “Bob” Young, both of Columbus; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; and several step-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Phyllis Vineyard; and a brother, Freddie Young.

The service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, September 10, 2008, at Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home, Spencer, with the Rev. Russ Stump officiating. Burial will be in the Otto Cemetery near Spencer.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mr. George William Yates Sr., 50, of Nitro passed away September 5, 2008, at home.

Mr. Yates is a former employee and member of Maranatha Fellowship, St. Albans, and a former auto mechanic. He loved spending time with his family and loved going to church and spending time with his brothers and sisters at Maranatha Fellowship.

He is survived by his mother, Addie Belle Yates; children, George William Yates II, William Emery Yates, Mark David Yates and Michael Bruce Yates; brothers, Terry and Larry Yates; sister, Diane Vinch; mother of his children, Cheryl Sue Boyd; and grandmother of his children, Irene Adkins.

Thelma L. Yates, 78, of Dunbar passed away peacefully Friday, September 5, 2008, at Thomas Memorial Hospital, surrounded by her family.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 57 years, Richard L. Yates Sr.; her mother, Edith D. Bossie; father, George W. Bossie; sister, Phyllis J. Feldhaus; and brother, George U. Bossie.

Left to cherish her memory are her children, son, Richard. L. “Dickie” Yates Jr. (Teri) of St. Albans, daughters, Lisa Cavender (Gary) of Dunbar and Molly Hylton (Darrell) of Hurricane. She is also survived by brothers, Jack R. Bossie of Charleston, Frank A. Bossie of Melbourne, Fla.; sister, Rebecca J. Lemley of Poca; and dearest friend, Wanda Myers and husband Jerry of Dunbar. She leaves behind seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren, who will always love their Nanny.

Her family was her life and she was a great friend to her neighbors. She spent the last ten years of her life caring for every need of her husband during his battle with Alzheimer's.

She and her husband were members of both Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Nitro and Christ the King Catholic Church in Dunbar over the years. Her faith in Christ never wavered.

Her children would like to thank Father Manuel Gelido for his kindness and support throughout the loss of both of our parents. We are also very grateful to Dr. Michael DeWitt and her caregivers, Vickie, Cathy and Rose, who provided continual loving care to our Mother.

Mass of Christian burial will take place Tuesday, September 9, 2008, at Christ the King Catholic Church, 1504 Grosscup Avenue, Dunbar. Visitation starts at 9:30 a.m. with the service starting at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Cunningham Memorial Park.
